Were Mark O'Keefe given the opportunity of starting his working life over again he would probably study exercise science, he says. Even so, lifestyle is the most important factor in Mark's life, certainly more than making money.
Born and bred in Wollongong, Mark attended St Brigids where he spent a stint as an alter boy. He then continued his studies at Edmund Rice College. Mark was eager to enter the workforce and decided that completing an apprenticeship of some form or another was mandatory. He was devastated when his initial application for an apprenticeship in the refrigeration and air conditioning are was unsuccessful, but elated just a few weeks later when Graeme Hodder offered him a position with 'Carrier Air Conditioning' as a refrigeration and air conditioning apprentice.
Once qualified, Mark spent the next few years working for a number of air conditioning businesses in Wollongong, Brisbane and Cairns. It was during this time that he also worked as a gym instructor in John Dorahy's Gym and as a lifeguard with the Wollongong City Council. He decided too that he had to improve his management skills and completed a Management course at Wollongong TAFE.
With his management Certificate on board, Mark decided that he had learnt enough to establish his own air conditioning business and in 1993 Rapidcool was created. His business, though small, enjoys an excellent reputation in the local area for prompt, efficient service. The comp nay provides and installs traditional room air conditioners, split systems and ducted air conditioners for domestic, commercial and industrial applications.
"I'm an impatient person and I don't like waiting for people. Why should my customers wait for me? If I'm running behind time I make a point of contacting the customer to let them know how long I'll be. I believe that they shouldn't have to wait around waiting. The customer is the most importation person because without them I wouldn't be in business."
